Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council wanted to achieve a 50% household recycling rate. The tender process called for a waste management company to efficiently sort the 28,000 tonnes of recyclables collected from the area’s 110,000 households and recycling sites. The contract also sought a smooth transition between waste management contracts and best resource value.
Materials from Walsall’s co-mingled, fortnightly collection were diverted to Casepak’s Leicester MRF. The MRF’s ability to process a wide range of materials, including all those accepted by Walsall’s previous waste contract, meant that there has been no need for a break in services.
Since the start of the contract, Casepak has worked with the council on a programme of continuous quality improvements and participation campaigns. Reporting, grading and materials analysis has been central to this ongoing partnership work.
The MRF’s intensive screening and inspection programme has maximised resource value while the facility’s increased sorting and processing capacity provides economies of scale to ensure the council obtains best value for money.
